CVS Health Charity Classic

Christmas came early to the 103 area nonprofit organizations that received checks from the CVS Health Charity Classic on December 17 at the company’s headquarters in Woonsocket. The huge check presentation was the result of the CVS Health Charity Classic that was held in June at Rhode Island Country Club with 20 of the top golfers in the world.

“This is one of my favorite days of the year,” said CVS Caremark President and CEO Larry Merlo as he displayed the huge check with $1.3 million written on the it as he stood alongside tournament chairperson Eileen Howard Boone; and Brad Faxon and Billy Andrade who have co-hosted the event since its beginning in 1999. The total raised for organizations during those 16 years has now surpassed $19 million and is by far the largest Rhode Island charitable sporting event.

“Giving back to our local communities and supporting organizations that help children and families in need is at the heart of the Charity Classic. “Every year, we’re inspired by the dedication and hard work of our charitable partners across Southern New England,” said Merlo. “The Charity Classic is an event that allows us to support this wonderful community and it seems only fitting that during the holiday season, we give back to those organizations that have provided support and resources to local schools, children and families in need throughout the year.

“Many of our non-profits assist us in providing over 1,000 volunteers for our tournament, and we couldn’t run it without them,” commented Merlo as he shook hands with many of the representatives of the organizations. Joe Andruzzi, former New England Patriot and former cancer patient who has his own Foundation spoke about how CVS’s support has helped him “pay it forward to help families dealing with cancer.” “CVS Health is a great partner,” added Andruzzi.

Co-chair Brad Faxon spoke of how this day gives him “The greatest feeling to be here

with all our partners and being able to help them with their fundraising. CVS Health is a great company, Rhode Island is a great state and this is a great charity,” he said with a huge smile on his face. Added Billy Andrade, “This truly is a ‘family affair’ to get together with all our partners, and is my number one accomplishment each year.”

The dates of the 2016 CVS Health Charity Classic are June 26-28. Announcements for the field will start in April and be completed by early June.
