One of the most anticipated new golf courses in the country officially opened on May 26 with the grand opening of Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point in the Bronx, N.Y in front of dozens of dignitaries and about 100 members of the press.

Present at the festivities were Donald Trump, chairman and president of The Trump Organization, accompanied by his children, Donald Jr, Ivanka and Eric Trump as well as designer Jack Nicklaus and his wife, Barbara. The course has already been receiving rave reviews for its wonderful design, playability and the great view of the Whitestone and Throgs Neck Bridges, the East River leading out to Long Island Sound and the Manhattan skyline just minutes away.

“I am honored to have played such a major role with respect to this great course for the people of New York City and finally finished what many could not, in a very short period of time. Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point is truly an incredible course that will undoubtedly host many major championships in the years to come,” said Trump in his opening remarks.

Said Nicklaus, who has won 18 major championships and recently was given the Congressional Medal of Honor and was voted Golf Magazine’s 2014 Architect of the Year, “If you are going to have a golf course that has the ability to host a high-profile national or international event, you have to have some spice in it. Our goal as a public golf course is to have it play well on a daily basis and serve the needs of those golfers who visit Ferry Point. We have the ability to move back the tees and hide the pins to make this a test fitting of any tournament or championship.”

Nicklaus continued, “I hope it’s a great source of pride for New Yorkers and a special experience for those who visit. You have an ideal situation with Ferry Point, located just minutes from downtown Manhattan, and a view of the New York skyline during any event you might have. It’s an unbelievable golf course.”

Local politicians from the Bronx spoke about how this former landfill was planned as a golf course as far back as 1977. “We never thought it was going to happen. It takes someone who is a doer like Donald Trump to get it to the finish line,” said the president of the Bronx borough.

Ferry Point has already hosted the New York City high school golf championships and plans are underway to host the New York state championships. A caddie program is being started and local children will have the opportunity to get free lessons during some summertime events.

New York City Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver said, “This official opening of the new premier public golf course at Ferry Point Park gives us the opportunity to showcase the Bronx on a national stage. This is the 14th course golf course in NYC and the first in 50 years and will offer New Yorkers and visitors a unique recreational experience on the City’s first tournament-quality golf course. We really need to thank Donald Trump for making this happen so quickly after all our years of trying to have this property be a golf course.”

The press had the opportunity to play the course after the festivities. All of the landfill soil has been replaced by clean fill from the building of subway sections, bridges and even some soil from the World Trade Tower renovations.

A few ponds on the property and wonderful mounding that makes you think of the British Isles and the links-style, just enhances that feel. There are many sets of tees ranging back to 7,400 yards, so pick the correct one for your game if you choose to play. The greens are very large and undulating. Pins could certainly be tucked in tough spots for tournaments.

The course is pristine. The wind off the water is your constant companion as there are no trees to break the wind. There are quite a few elevation changes throughout the property and the mounding and fescue grasses make it play harder than you would think.

Michael Breed from the Golf Channel was the emcee for the event. He announced that he is going to have a golf academy at the course that has a huge lighted practice range (Trump had parked his helicopter on the range for the event)

Rates for playing on the course are not inexpensive as you can imagine in New York City. If you are going to splurge on your trip to New York City, there are many more ways to spend your money that would not be as fun.
